Corijn – ‘In The Meadow’ –

De Groningse singer/songwriter Corijn zweeft al een aantal dagen door het hoofd van ondergetekende. Wat een fijne stem. Wat een fijn cd-hoesje. Wat een fijn haar. En vooral: wat een mooie muziek. In mei van dit jaar won Corijn met zijn eerste single ‘In The Meadow’ overtuigend de landelijke finale van Nootuitgang. En met geplande optredens op onder meer EuroSonic en de StuKaFesten in Utrecht en Groningen gaat hij (en wij!) een mooie tijd tegemoet, waarin het gras groen is, de lucht helder en de liefde eindeloos.
Corijns liedjes zijn fluisterend, intiem en soms heerlijk vrolijk door een hier en daar perfect toegevoegde banjo (zoals in het fijn voortzwevende ‘The Grace Of Haze’). Corijn zegt beïnvloed te zijn door onder meer Iron & Wine en James Taylor, en dat is zeker goed te horen. Maar het mag, want zijn gitaarspel en zijn stem doen absoluut niet onder voor die van deze genoemde melancholieken. Het resulteert in een aantal mooie, breekbare liedjes die ontzettend goed in elkaar zitten. Het beste is zijn muziek misschien wel te vergelijken met de Australische Angus & Julia Stone. Corijns hese fluisterstem heeft een vergelijkbaar karakter, bereik en daarmee ook even fijne charme als de mannelijke helft van dit duo. Ook zijn gitaarspel bevindt zich in diezelfde marge, maar zonder aan eigen geluid tekort te komen.
Wanneer hij zingt lijkt Corijn bescheiden, bijna verlegen, onzeker over zijn eigen kunnen. Maar dat is nergens voor nodig. Dit is een ep om immens, we herhalen, immens trots op te zijn.
