Nootuitgang zet deuren open voor Corijn
Nederland biedt jong, muzikaal talent weinig mogelijkheden om hun kunsten aan het grote publiek te vertonen. De Groningse student Corijn van Mazijk (20) deed mee aan de nationale Student Singer/Songwriter Contest Nootuitgang en greep zo één van deze unieke kansen. Hij imponeerde de jury met zijn hese stem en het prachtige nummer In The Meadow. Met de juryprijs in zijn broekzak is de eerste studiotijd een gegeven. ‘Ik vond het tijd mijn muziek met andere mensen te gaan delen.’
Geïnspireerd door vrienden
Muziek maken is Corijn niet met de paplepel ingegoten, maar sinds zijn veertiende is hij er erg actief mee bezig. "Vrienden inspireerden mij destijds om met muziek bezig te zijn. De akoestische gitaar sprak mij het meeste aan en dit is nog steeds zo." Inmiddels heeft hij zich ook verdiept in de drums, basgitaar, mandoline en de banjo. "Ik ben pas sinds mijn zeventiende gaan zingen, ondanks dat ik het al veel langer wilde." Muziek ging voor Corijn steeds meer betekenen. "Het bleek heel rustgevend te zijn om met muziek bezig te zijn en ik kon er mijn emoties in kwijt."
Perfectionisme en (on)zekerheid
Rust en ingetogenheid zijn kenmerkend voor Corijn als persoon en komen ook duidelijk terug in zijn nummers. Ondanks dat hij met zekerheid praat over zijn muziek, durfde hij lange tijd niet de stap te zetten om zijn kunsten tentoon te stellen. "Ik ben heel perfectionistisch en ondanks dat het vervelend werd om mijn werk alleen voor mezelf te houden, vond ik mijn nummers zelden goed genoeg. Pas sinds dit jaar durf ik mijn eigen muziek ten gehore te brengen."
Muziek als kunst
De jonge muzikant vertelt dat hij flink wat tijd steekt in het schrijven van de teksten. "Ik laat mij inspireren door mijn gemoedstoestanden. De nummers gaan vaak over mezelf, maar ik hoop dat ook andere mensen zich er in kunnen vinden." Commercieel succes is dan ook niet zijn belangrijkste streven. "In eerste instantie wil ik muziek maken die goed in elkaar zit. De tekst moet diepgang hebben en muziek kan dit ondersteunen. Door hier een goede balans in te vinden, hoop ik mij met mijn muziek te kunnen onderscheiden." Ondanks dat muziek een steeds belangrijker plaats inneemt, heeft Corijn bewust niet voor het conservatorium gekozen. "Daar wordt muziek eerder als wetenschap beschouwd, waar ik het als een kunstvorm zie."

De muziek van Corijn werd door de jury hoog op artistieke waarde geschat. De Groningse student is erg blij dat hij heeft meegedaan aan Nootuitgang en geeft toe dat hij stiekem dacht dat hij een goede kans zou maken. "Ik hoopte natuurlijk dat ik ging winnen. Je moet wel in jezelf geloven.’ Het winnen van de Singer/Songwriter Contest is een goede opstap naar meer succes. Ambitie heeft Corijn zeker. "Ik zou het liefst professioneel met muziek bezig zijn. Het hoogste doel hierin ligt voor mij in het combineren van de populariteit van een moderne singer/songwriter alsJohn Mayer met de kunstzinnigheid van mijn muzikale voorbeelden zoals Nick Drake en Bob Dylan," lacht hij.
